How to make a startup product video with AI
A good product video does one job: it makes a stranger understand what your product does in under 45 seconds. You do not need a film crew for that. This guide walks through the five decisions that matter, in the order you should make them.

1. Decide the one message
Write one sentence that finishes "After watching, the viewer knows that...". If you need two sentences, you have two videos. Most startup videos fail because they try to explain the company, the product, the team and the roadmap at once.
Good examples of a single message:
- "Our app turns a spreadsheet into a dashboard in one click."
- "We launched a free plan for freelancers."
- "Version 2.0 adds team workspaces."
2. Pick the type of video
The type decides length and structure.
- Promo video (15-30 seconds). Built for social feeds and ads. One feature, one call to action.
- Launch video (30-45 seconds). Announces something new. Shows the product in use, then where to get it.
- Explainer video (30-60 seconds). Teaches what the product does for people who have never heard of it. It works best on a homepage.
If you are unsure, start with a 30-second launch video. It is short enough to finish and long enough to show the product.
3. Write a 30-second script
Use four beats. Each one gets roughly the same number of seconds.
- Hook (0-5 s). The problem, stated the way your customer would say it.
- Product in use (5-20 s). Show the real interface doing the thing. Use your actual screens, not stock footage.
- Result (20-27 s). What changed for the user.
- Call to action (27-30 s). One action, one URL.
Keep on-screen text to a few words per scene. People watch with the sound off more often than you expect, so the text should carry the message by itself, and the voiceover or music should support it.
4. Gather your assets
Prepare these before you start, whichever way you produce the video:
- Logo as SVG or PNG with a transparent background
- Brand colors and fonts
- 3-6 clean screenshots or a short screen recording of the product
- The script, with the exact words you want on screen
- Optional: a reference video whose pacing you like
Clean assets matter more than anything else. Blurry screenshots and cluttered test data make any video look cheap.
5. Choose how to produce it
There are three realistic options.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself in an editor or AI tool | Full control, lowest cash cost | Takes hours, and results look generic without motion design skills |
| Hire a freelancer or agency | Custom storytelling | Higher cost and slower turnaround |
| Order from an AI motion graphics service | Fast, professional-looking motion graphics from your assets | Less suited to live-action or filmed scenes |
Mugam AI is built for the third option: you write a short brief, upload your logo and screens, and receive a finished motion graphics video. Every new account can order one free video (up to 45 seconds, 720p, 16:9, with the Mugam AI watermark and end card).
6. Export the right formats
Make the main version in 16:9 for your website, YouTube and LinkedIn. If you also post on Instagram, TikTok or Shorts, you will need a vertical 9:16 version, so keep important text away from the edges from the start.
Checklist before you publish
- The video makes one point
- Text is readable with the sound off
- The product shown is the real product
- The call to action names one action and one URL
- The first 3 seconds make sense on their own
